It turned out to be in crate #12. I popped in on the turntable, put the needle down, and reminisced. From the opening bars of the first track "Open My Heart" I began to remember my old junior high school girlfriend, Susan. As Boom Union's lead singer, Kyle Pepperidge, yelped the line "and the tide of love ebbs again / we sway to the jukebox's glimmering pulse" I could distinctly recall a raging fight Susan and I shared about "commitment" or something stupid like that. Her father - a gentle soul, if a little p-whipped - always told me that he couldn't wait to call me "son" and have it be for real. Needless to say, I had to get out of that situation before my youth was completely pissed away.
Now look at me: mid-thirties (though I still get carded almost everywhere) and living solo in one of those new "mid-luxury" condos on the edge of downtown. Floating down a seemingly endless stream of meaningless one-night-stands with the odd 2-week "relationship" thrown in there for good measure, I call myself happy and I even believe it sometimes. My career is rock solid, at least. That said, if I never have to deal with another crybaby client again, it'll be too soon.
Anyway, back to the record. Yeah, search it out and give it a listen. You'll love it. I promise. Ignore the fact that the jacket looks strikingly similar to this late-eighties dud:
