The moon was coveredIn an oil slick
A puff of black tobacco
You arrived late
And I suspected
Drunk on puma tears
Your hand sparked
Like a frayed cord
When it touched my arm
I held up the incense
As if a holy cross
Or vial of pepper spray
The glowing tip reflected
In your glassy eyes
And you blinked
Suddenly your head exploded
Into antlers, drooping nose
And doe eyes
Your body shook out legs
Barreled in the middle
And shot up fur
You landed on four legs
And stared down at me
Dumbly
Then you wandered away
Into the expanding moonlight
Leaving me alone
And human
