Giant Steps

Poem written while listening to the song "Giant Steps" by John Coltrane (4:45 minutes). Interrupted at 2:37 by a phone call then resumed.

the Richard suggestion with the waxy sleeves and the orange blaze
caught my eye in the rainwater
up to my knees

George is folding napkins downstairs
the humidity is too much
a good time for a cold clam broth

13th and Vince street
club the size of a bathtub
Junior Tarkington hauling coal on stage
Little Robert on the stand up typewriter

Pierce my ears with your sweet orange mist
the rind between my teeth
time is a thief

The bronze statue is tattooed with a cartoon:
the cross country skier versus the water skier in a hallway of mirrors

i see in five dimensions
the fifth is the bagel in the sack
they say
