It's from 1980, on the Mango label and is a Sly and Robbie production. I can't tell if it is real drums or electronic drums or some of both. It says 1980 to me. They use that laser/phaser sound and the beats are almost clubby - like really deeply stoned Debbie Gibson slowed way down and simplified and then with added laser/phaser sounds. You could rollerskate to this music, take a shower to it, or sit in a chair either alone or with friends and drink a post work beer and sit there not talking to this music. This music fits whatever you are doing. I think it is idea listening for some kind of otherwise mindless activity like cleaning the house.
When you have little kids, it is hard to listen to music sometimes because any sound is a sound that is in addition to all the sound already happening in the room and it can make things seems sonically crowded and stress everybody out. That's why I end up putting on reggae or dub music almost exclusively when kids are playing and we are either playing or cleaning or whatever. This music can create space in the room, instead of filling it. It also has good vibes.
And what an awesome cover.
